Garry Pereira
Artist Interview
You are well know for painting seascapes, what draws you to this subject?
I have had a long fascination with the sea, early childhood days spent in Norfolk on the beach I think started my love of the sea…. These days an avid Shipping Forecast fan, it’s absolute poetry…!
Do you have a routine to set you up for the day?
Morning routine for me is almost military…, involving cold showers, porridge made the Scottish way, and dog walking!
My studio day starts early, with usually loud music, a pencil, and a strong coffee.
What medium do you prefer and why?
I am mainly an oil painter, I love everything about oil paints, the tradition, the mess, the smell…. I have a great love of oil paintings, I think it started either when I was very young, and I bought a small cheap set of oils, and/or it may have been when I saw a show "‘Monet in the 90’s” when I was about 13 years old.
Tell us a bit more about your journey to becoming an artist; did you study art?
I’m not too sure if it was a journey, more a calling. I never really wanted to do anything else. I studied art, a Degree, and a Masters Degree, but mainly as a way of painting full time.
You have been known for working outside, and on boats! Do you enjoy working outside?
I spend lots of time painting outside, I love the elements and feeling part of something bigger.
What advice would you give your younger self?
“Don’t worry so much”
Who has been your biggest influence in life?
Anybody who is an individual really, not afraid of doing their own thing… Notably two art teachers, “Gill & Bob” who have taught me ‘A’ Level and Foundation Art…..
Where is your studio and what makes it a satisfying place to work?
My studio is in Norwich, it is a very old ex-Alms house. It is tucked away and very quiet…. It’s very traditional, really heated by wood-burners, and it’s a very nice place to be. I limit technology there and it offers perfect refuge from often the madness of the world!!
